best friends - short story extract
It was first day at school tomorrow. Megan’s Mum sewed labels on all of Megan’s school clothes in bold red letters. Everything was clean, well ironed and folded up neatly. Megan looked proudly at her clothes which Mum laid carefully on her bed – a black skirt, a white shirt and a red jumper. There was a black and red stripy tie as well, but Megan was not sure she liked it.
By her bed, there stood a pair of new black shoes of the latest fashion. On the desk, next to her bed, there was a new exercise book with Whinny the Pooh on the front, a brand new pencil, a globe shaped sharpener in bright blue, a new folding ruler and a bright pink pencil case. She fondled all of these new items lovingly, admiring each one in turn. They were all going to go in her smart new pear shaped, blue and white bag.
She was excited! She could not wait for the morning when she would wear her new uniform, and feel all smart and grown up. She nearly forgot about her bear Bruno whom she loved so much, and whom she thought she would greatly miss. Mum said she could not take him to school. She was now grown up and she needed to learn to leave him behind. That night before she fell asleep, she gave him a special hug and looked at him with longing. But in the morning, she felt free and ready to face the day without him. She was bright and rearing to go to her new school.
She walked to school with Mum. All the other children walked with their Mum or Dad, and everything around seemed cheerful.
The school play ground was teaming with children saying goodbye to their parents. Megan noticed some of her friends at a distance. She was now keen to meet them. She quickly kissed her Mum good bye and ran off eagerly to meet Kate and Susie.
Almost as soon as she arrived at their spot, her excitement was drained away. To her friendly hello, they just giggled and turned their backs on her. Then they whispered frantically with each other and walked off.
Megan felt a huge pain in her heart. She was glued to the spot in total disbelief. Why did they just ignore her like this and walked off?
And to think that she was the one who introduced them to each other in the first place!
